Thera was enjoying herself at the autumn fair. Walking around, she had spotted a group of people standing together and decided to see if she can't be friendly with them. With a smile, Thera walked over and said, "hi."

[[ I'll get the Song Fest started, weee! ]]

Harabec grinned and nodded towards the motley array of people from Cascade City. "Och, a fair bunch 'o bairns they are, some of 'em Ah've known weel, others Ah'm jus' gettin' acquainted wi', but we've fought together an' that's wot's brung us together. Naow, wot brings ye out o' yer fair moors t' visit Eardras?" It was always an odd feeling to have to look up at someone when addressing them (always being used to himself as the tallest thing around), and Harabec wondered, again, what Mitsu's mother must have fed him when he was young.

"Aaaaaaaaaahnd now! Coming from you, aaaaaall the way, from h'Elden! Th' great, h'and marvelous Festival Singing Contest! Step up, laaaadies and gents, h'and serenade us with your amaaaaaaaaaazing talent! To the winner goes this faaaaaaaaantastic, wonderful, aaaaaall you can eat ticket for the food market! h'Aaaand also, this one-of-a-kind hat!"

From over near wing a wide-bellied Raihu had stepped up to a podium and bellowed out his announcement in a pompous voice. Folks began to gather around, forming a line. And who was at the front? Harabec slipped his form (more like kindly excused himself as he ploughed through) and bounded onto the stage, eager as a schoolboy.

"Ah'll goo first! Ah'm a braw singer, Ah used t'sing for mah whole clan and send them off to sleep!" Holding his tail daintily in one hand, he bowed and then began to sing.

To his credit, his singing was....enthusiastic.

But in order to compare his singing to anything, we beg the pardon of squished frogs, birds stuck upside down in an accordian while it is being sat on, or a lonely duck bemoaning its fate on a warm winter's night. He was loud, off-key, and almost operatic. He attempted to compose his lyrics on the spot, but they ended up thus:

"Ah'm a great ole' son of th' northern mooooooors,
and Ah ken run for miles and miles and miles and miles and miles
an' never stop to ask for directions,
but if you get to askin' mah naaaaaaaaaaame,
Ah'll gladly tell ye what it is,

Caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaause,
Ah'm a fearless son o' th' wintry plains,
Ah'm a fearless son o' th' wintry plains,
Ah'm a fearless son o' th' wintry plaaaaaaaains
laaadeedaa dun dun dun dunnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn,"

He took a deep breath and the announcer was about to attempt beleagured applause-

"Sooooo if ye cooom oot t' Ardor some day,
ask for me an' I'll come and say 'Heeeeeey!'
there's nothin' Ah like more than to cooom oot an' play,
dumdee dun dun duuuuuuuuuuh doooo daaaaaaaay!"

Grinning broadly, he bowed several times and walked off stage. A cricket hiding beneath the platform chirped once, and then fell over.

((I'm sorry about the quality of this post: I'm hot, sticky and tired, and there are cane toads outside my bedroom window. I hope you like Wing's song.))

Wing had noticed the arrival of her acquaintances from Cascade, even assaying a shy wave to her hero Harabec, but she stopped short of coming over to say hello. After all, there were plenty of people there that she didn't know, and she didn't want to embarrass her fluffy friend by accidentally saying something rude. And besides, she didn't exactly want to lose her place in the line. Her integrity as an apple-gourmet depended on it. All she had to do was stand and sing while a couple of hundred people stared at her, analyzing her every note and judging her on the slightest quiver in pitch, and she would be able to pay her debts...

Wing turned and bolted, her fear sprouting wings from her shoulders. She probably would have flown quite a long way too, had not Harabec (accidentally, of course,) galumphed merrily into a rather portly lute-player on his way down to join the queue and sent him pinwheeling into the Ivory Girl's elbow, spinning her on the spot in mid-stride and sending her dashing full-tilt back towards the stage before her poor, scattered wits could gather themselves up. The portly, pompous Raihu host stared down his horns at her in mild surprise.

"Back again, are we? I thought you'd got cold feet. Oh well, no matter..." he said, ignoring Wing's soundless protests, "You can go on right after this furry fellow."

Harabec was on stage already? Curious, Wing loosened her hood in order to hear her friend more clearly and almost fell over backwards. The din reminded her of two barges colliding. As a flock of ducks tap-danced on a nearby pier. While a group of drunks tried (in vain,) to yodel the Wild Rose's Hornpipe.
But he was enjoying himself so much, and after a few moments of pained silence the watching crowd burst out laughing: not in jest at Harabec's... voluminous singing, but because they could appreciate the big Juna's sense of fun. The Raihu applauded dryly.

"A...ah... splendid effort, Sir. Let's have another round of applause, shall we?"

The crowd complied, cheering heartily. The Raihu grinned and beckoned to Wing, who found that her mouth had exchanged her tongue for a cup of sand while she wasn't looking.

"S-sir... can I wear my hood and facewrap while I sing?"

The Raihu snorted. "Of course not! How are we going to hear you otherwise? Silly girl. Take them off and get singing: you're not the only one waiting to have a try."

She didn't have a choice. Reluctantly, Wing slid the hood from her ashy hair and stumbled out onto the stage. A myriad eyes clamped their questioning gazes onto her face and Stagefright promptly jumped onto her head and, in a loving, helpful gesture, began trying to grind her through the platform and into the earth below, where she could sink into the earth and never have to come out again...

But she had to pay for that apple.

"U-um... h-hello... this song is called "Hope." "

Wing couldn't remember performing afterwards: her mind simply went on autopilot and danced off to play with the faeries as she clasped her hands in front of her and sang an old ballad a merchant and his friends often called on her to perform around the campfire in Vestra. To call the girl's voice spellbinding would be an insult to her talent. As it washed over the audience, quiet, soft, soaring and celestial, the only thing that could have surpassed the song's beauty was Wing's own.

"I remember when I knew you,
My silver haired, silver eyed,
Cloudy-carefree cotton-sighs,
I remember when I knew you.

Oh, I wish I still knew you.

I dream of when you taught me,
To love and live and never die,
To laugh, but not be afraid to cry,
I dream of when you taught me.

Oh, why can't you still teach me?

Sometimes I think you love me,
When you smile and hold my hand,
When you nod and understand,
Sometimes I think you love me.

But you will never love me.

Because she's waiting for you,
Although I'm here to laugh and cry,
Although I want to live my life.... with you...
You know she's waiting for you.

Why can't you wait for me too?

So I will always love you,
Though in her arms you kiss and sigh,
And as I watch I pine and die,
I will always love you.

And hope that you'll love me too."

Wing came back to herself in silence, staring for a moment at the dumbfounded crowd before bobbing a quick curtsy and slinking, head bowed, off the stage. Did they like it? Would they applaud?

Please... don't let them hate me...

Mirai stood in mute horror as Harabec announced his intention to sing, only able to stare at him and his huge friend while the meaning of the words slowly sank in. "Sing? B-but--"

But Harabec was Harabec, and she had barely taken half a step back before he was off, roaring out his good spirits and steamrolling anyone or anything that got in his way. The healer followed, caught in the wake of the massive Juna, and before she knew what was happening they were all there in queue, with her dear friend up on the stage bold as brass. Miss Smythesson buried her face in her hands and commended her soul to the Grey Lord, already knowing that the moment her foot touched those planks she was done for. What a way to die, too! She could literally have her pick of any of the romantic deaths in the world, and instead would wind up fainting dead away of fright at a country fair. Ridiculous.

At that moment Harabec started to sing, and with her eyes closed Mirai soon forgot her troubles. How could she think of herself now, when somewhere out there a trio of ducks were in desperate trouble? Perhaps one of them had been run over by a cart or something, the sound reaching her ears certainly sounded that way--one creature in terrible agony; the rest mourning the loss of a beloved companion. The girl peeked out between her fingers, and immediately saw her Harabec prancing around the stage. There was a time of slow and silent wonder, and then it happened. Mirai couldn't help it. Her mouth split into a smile, and then a grin, and after the stunned silence following Harabec's performance the grin became a laugh. Nor was she alone; the entire place filled with the sounds of an appreciative and amused audience. He'd made a terrible din, but the way he was beaming out at the world also made it very plain that Harabec didn't care. The healer's hands came together in applause, not so much for the 'music' as a recognition of his confidence and merry spirit. It was impossible for her to even imagine doing the same thing herself without being tormented of it later, and although the rest of the world was laughing at the Kahl's performance, thinking it over now she only felt awe.

Harabec shuffled off with a wave, and then the next in line stepped forward--a young woman, dressed most strange and seeming every bit as shy as Mirai herself. The healer watched in open curiosity the banter between contestant and announcer, edging forward just a little to try to get a glimpse of the girl behind her hood and wrap. Very shortly after, her curiosity was sated--the cloth fell away, and Mirai could only gasp. This maiden was beautiful! Seeing Wing's loveliness made something twist in her own heart; something that drew her smile away into uncertainty. When the lovely girl started singing, it was even worse. Her voice was heavenly in itself, but the words of the song stabbed like a serrated knife.

Silver haired...silver eyed...I dream of when you taught me...

Mirai did not know that Wing was singing an old ballad. For all she knew, this stranger had ripped her heart right out into the open and held it up for the world to see, weaving melodies around to keep it still in her palm. The song was about her; her and the Alagos Harabec had so recently tried to make her forget. What else could it be? The silver-haired teacher, a student who loved and missed him, and the teacher himself snared in another woman's arms. There was nothing like it.

Every phrase sung with that beautiful voice felt like a punch to the gut, and by the time the tune was over Mirai was completely drained of color with tears streaming down her cheeks. She stood frozen, not hearing the applause or noticing when the audience leaped to its feet. Only vaguely did she see the announcer beckoning her forward, lips forming around soundless words. Mirai shook her head at him, dazed, then walked forward to the very center of the stage and stopped. Faces, all these faces, and in her mind's eye one with silver hair. Her lips parted.

"...I can't do this." It was a whisper. "I'm sorry."

With that she fled. The healer darted away from the stage and crowd, not slowing until she found herself a barrel in a nice quiet corner behind the stage. Mirai sat down upon it and curled her knees up to her face, burying her head in her skirt as she cried.

((Man, sorry to wreck the hilarious theme going on here. -___- Mirai is such a party pooper!!! But that song really was uncanny, lol. ))

Wing had been dithering backstage, halfway between cramming her fingers in her ears or dashing away to escape the torrent of inevitable boos. So when the crowd stood as one, screaming its delight, the Ivory Girl was so shocked that she almost fainted. Managing to stay conscious with the aid of a few stout-backed motes of realisim who had shoved their flat heads under her armpits, she poked her light-headed face curiously back onto stage, just to make sure she wasn't dreaming, and felt her anxiety melt away in the storm of adoration. The little Bane beamed, laughing happily... but they shouldn't be focusing on her. After all, this was a competition, and there was bound to be someone far more skilled then her waiting to sing. The Raihu was already ushering the next singer, a willowy, dark-haired human girl, onto the stage: Wing ducked back out of sight, watching and waiting eagerly for the song to start.

But... her face was pale, her cheeks glittering with tears underneath eyes that ached with horrible memory, something that had torn her heart apart with an almost sadistic attention to detail. Almost doll-like, she glided forward, not seeing the crowd before her, the announcer scurrying, suddenly concerned, at her elbow. Wing stared helplessly, frozen as needles of numb sorrow began to worm their way spitefully through her own heart. What had happened to her? Why was she so sad? Did she see or hear something that...?

Shock. Horror. Realisation. Did I do that?!

"I can't do this." It was a whisper. "I'm sorry."

She fled. Wing crumpled, her suspicions confirmed. It's my fault. It has to be. I had to sing that stupid song! Self-loathing screamed up her arms, tugging her hood viciously over her head, the face-wrap securely over those disgusting features. She would never forgive herself for this, ever.

Timidly, a common-sense imp peekd over her shoulder and suggested that, just maybe, she was being a little melodramatic.

But... she's hurting so badly. I could see it, I could feel it.

Well, the imp reasoned, Why don't you go and apologise? She hasn't gone far. Just listen.

The imp was right. If she strained her ears, Wing could faintly hear the sound of crying not far away. Grey-cloaked and light-footed, it didn't take long to follow the heartbreaking sobs: threading a trail through merchants and crowd members until finally Wing stood, awkward and guilty, before the curled-up Healer atop the barrel. The Ivory Girl shuffled her feet soundlessly, painfully aware that, as always, she had no idea what to say. But she had to try. Somehow.

"I... I'm sorry..." She whispered, not even knowing if the Healer could hear her, and trailed off, feeling foolish. How could she know what the girl was going through? She had never fallen in love, never even come close. But... she knew what it felt like to feel alone. As if that settled it, Wing tripped quietly over and slipped onto the barrel next to the Healer, wrapping her arms around her shoulders. She might not be able to say anything else, but, perhaps before her horrible aura chilled the air and made this girl hate her, she could say without saying just how much she was sorry, that she wanted to help and that... well... in a way... she wasn't alone in how she felt, and that it was a festival and she shouldn't be sad, so please don't cry...

Lost in her silent reassurances, Wing didn't even notice when tears, shimmering with empathy, began to roll down her cheeks as well.

Ah! The jubulant sounds of the Autumn Fair! The succulent food, the laughing crowds, the singing Juna, the scented air! The merry baritone laughter of Azure Nider could be heard from the other side of the fairground, bouncing off stalls, scaring shopkeepers and causing the fairground dogs to freeze in absolute terror before bolting up the road with their tails between their legs, howling. All these things couldn't fail to cause the Jester nothing less then amusment.

"Honestly, the way they look at me... you'd think I was some rare breed of demon."

Tia Matthews, a pretty sdarn of a six-year-old, shifted her negligible weight on his gleaming pauldron and giggled, holding her fingers to her lips like the great lady Azure was sure she would one day become.

"Well of course they do! You make more noise then an elephant, Uncle Azure."

Azure burst into laughter again, causing a nearby group of card-players to jump in fright and flip their table, completely scramble their hands.

"An elephant! Goodness me! (I'm so sorry gentlemen, here, let me fix that for you...) I thought I was badger last time we checked."

" 'N owl."

Azure snapped off a quick Spellweave without looking (causing cards, table and players alike to soar back into their previous positions,) raising his eyebrow at the child on his other shoulder.

"An owl, Vincent?"

The child, a seven-year-old boy, dangled his legs and shrugged. Azure considered this for a moment.

"I suppose, although I didn't have wings the last time I checked. Come!" He swung both children, Tia shrieking with laughter, Vincent sighing reluctantly, to the ground, gesturing at the seething celebration that surrounded them.
"Why don't you two run along and see what trouble you can get yourselves into? We'll meet by the lakeshore in a few hours, alright?"
"Alright!"
"...'lright..."
To the watching crowd, it could have been a picture lifted from the pages of any celebrated ballad: the two children dashing off hand in hand in search of fun and adventure, their benefactor (a priest? A paladin? Someone of high status anyway,) straightening up with a fond chuckle, watching them as they vanished into the crowd.
As he strode out himself, his pure-white robes snapping crisply in the wind, faces turned to follow him, men and women alike blushing as he turned a dazzling smile on each and every person he passed. He moved through the festival as if he owned it... perhaps he did? Certainly, it wouldn't come as a surprise. That noble bearing, the dark eyes flashing with warm humour behind his silver spectacles, the great sword (larger then most men were tall,) slung effortlessly over his back, the way light seemed to shine softly from his silvery hair, reflecting from his gauntlets, his pauldrons...
"Excuse me, my lady, but perhaps you could recommend a place of entertainment to me? This is my first time at this wonderful festival, you see, and I wish to do it justice."
The girl, a waitress who had paused in her endless dash for drinks to stare, flushed crimson, unable to do more then stammer.
"W-well sir, if you w-wanted to hear s-some music, there's a singing competition underway at the moment... not that it'd be your kind of entertainment, sir." She added quickly, thoughts of immaculate ballrooms rising swiftly through her mind... dancing the night away with her hand on the glittering shoulder of this handsome stranger...
Azure smiled: the poor girl practically melted.
"Thank you for your concern, my lady. But, you never know. You can find diamonds in the most unlikely of places." His dark eyes held hers, softly but firmly, until the last possible moment.
Turning away, Azure smiled happily to himself as the stage came into view.

Songs? Perhaps tonight will be far more fun then I originally anticipated. Gratefully relieving a nearby table of a goblet of wine (and carelessly clattering a fat golden coin across the wood in exchange,) he slipped into a chair and grinned as a minor scuffle broke out behind him.
Yes. Fun indeed.

The healer huddled into herself, lost from the world around her under the stifling pressure of grief. It wasn't fair. Her mother was dead and father unforgiving of the fact; for nearly ten years Alagos had been there, the steady influence and help in lifting her burden. And then he'd met this Lady, and that was that. Everyone left. Sooner or later, she would lose Harabec too, and then, well...

"I...I'm sorry."

The soft voice came out of nowhere and Mirai jumped ten inches from her seat, one hand hastily darting up to her eyes to catch the tears that refused to cease. There was only one person such a chime-like voice could belong too, and the healer was ashamed to be out here crying where everyone could see. Weeping before such a fairy as the other singer, as if her pride could take any further injury. "It's all r-right, you--"

She stopped. Cold, slender arms were around her shoulders and pulling her close, but with them was a definite sense of Wrong. Something vanished within her, a very part of the soul shuttered off, and the healer gave a squeak of fright. Where was her magic?

She'd never lost it before. Never. There had been days when she'd felt wounded or uninspired and then, well, the power was harder to reach. But it always been there, from the day she was born, and having it gone--the change was definitely noticeable. Mirai felt helpless; cold; and her mind immediately flashed back to the unforgettable day when a scarlet woman had plunged her hand into her breast and callously torn out her heart. Her Hoste. The nightmares still came of that emptiness, and with the link gone Mirai sat stiff and trembling in Wing's arms. It was hard to believe that this sweet-voiced girl was aligned with Chaos, but what else could be assumed? The tiny lady held her helpless, and it would only be a matter of time before the nightmare happened all over again.

Something wet fell onto her hand, and the healer turned her head ever so slightly to catch tears on the other woman's cheeks. Those were also Wrong, and for a moment Mirai was puzzled...but then she remembered herself, and took in a breath, and very slowly put her arms around the weeping Wing. "Don't cry. It's not your fault."

She forced back panic, adopting a soothing tone in an attempt to calm them both. "Milady Spirit, it's not your fault--that song was written about me, it seems, and it--" Mirai bit down on her lip to prevent it trembling. "It hurt. I have a Master, silver-haired and everything, and he only just wedded someone else. I was trying to forget."

Smythesson winced, but shook her head and caught the rest of her tears on her hand. "Of course you didn't know any of that. You sing so beautifully--please don't cry."

Mirai turned in Wing's arms and carefully lifted her arm, dabbing the sleeve of her gown over the maiden's lovely cheeks to dry her tears, her own face still pale as sand. "I am Mirai, milady, and at your service." The singer had to be some sort of messenger from the gods; she had to be. She was positively unearthly--not even Death Himself had given Mirai such a sense of unease. "If I may be of any, anyway. I cannot feel Him now."

Bluegreen eyes stared into sapphire, and they were frightened. But power or not Mirai was still Mirai, and after wondering a moment about the spirit-creature that could weep for her, the healer folded Wing into her arms. A soft hand stroked down the ashy hair, and the girl bent her head to press a kiss into the tangled strands. "Don't cry. I'm sorry to distress you. I'll be--" She sucked in a shuddering breath, then closed her eyes and tried valiantly not to be sick. "--Fine. Time will tell."

Fairs! Fairs were strange things, indeed they were, and the raihu lad had never been at such a large one. Upon stumbling out of the forest mere days ago, the first thing he had done was take a dive in the lake to clean off. So very much water…. How on earth did it get here? Why was there so much water here but not in the Waste? And why was it so cursed cold!? The days were still warm but with a chilly bite, and the icy feeling of the water had sent him dancing a jig back onto land, where the furzel waited, burrowing in his pack after whatever she could find there.

Something sparkled, clattering across a table, and Ben’s eyes widened as he snapped out of his past reverie, lunging for the bright glittery bit. “Sparkly!” Unfortunately for Ben, others had the same idea. Unfortunately for them, Ben, although not full grown, was clumsy, persistent, and possessed no real sense of his own strength. Winning the fight over the “sparkly” therefore, was easy. Getting where he wanted to go, however, was not.

“I smell pie!” clutching the coin in one large paw, Ben’s face lit up as he emerged from the scuffle, nose to the wind like a prize hound. An expression of joy (for winning the sparkly) and of anticipation (PIE!) took over the young raihu’s voice as he bounded off for the pie. Truly the directional sense of the raihu as led by his nose was no better than that of him being led by a map, for he found himself by a stage, with grumbling behind and a large raihu giving him a helpful boost onto the stage. But his tail had other ideas, and tripped him up, and he went half-sprawling, half-running to the center, where he somehow managed to catch his balance and stand, staring out at the crowd, coin still tucked in hand.

“err. Hi.” He grinned and gave a little wave.

[[ Awesome posts everyone, this is delightful! ]]

Harabec found that his furry cheeks were wet, to his surprise. Tears? Well, the big Kahl was soft-hearted, but he didn't cry too much. Yet somehow this petite young woman's voice had whispered into his heart and stirred memories of living on the moors with his wife. Dear....dear Tesann. Quickly brushing them away, he added his thunderous applause to the audience as Wing brought her song to an end. She looked so uncertain, so frail and quavering, it was hard to believe that such a radiant voice had come from her lips. Yet the beauty in her face seemed only to reflect her spirit.

Straightening his back and nudging Mitsu with an elbow, Harabec whispered (which for him is as much as a bullfrog whispering in an evening pond), "Weel noo, wot a beautiful voice she 'as! Bet ye miss th' ole moors noo, brings back memories t'me ole heart. An' wot aboot yeself, ye gonna goo up there an' sing us a wee ditty?"

But it was Mirai who scooted up onto the stage next, and Harabec's ears pricked forward as he gave her an encouraging thumbs up. Poor dear, she was trembling just like Wing. He didn't know she had stage fright! In the next minute she dashed offstage, and Harabec was about to dart after her, but then he spotted Wing following her instead.

He was a braw Kahl with a big heart, and a soft spot for Mirai, but something told him that now was a time for Wing and Mirai to speak alone, perhaps something about the two dear hearts was similar. And now a Raihu was clambering onto the stage.

"Ach, weel done!" Harabec roared out, clapping his furry hands together. "Let's 'ear a braw ditty outta ye, noo fears laddie, give us all ye got!"

Ben blinked out at the crowd, who seemed to be expecting something. He clasped the sparkly tighter in his palm, the edges digging in. What did they want? Why was he up here? He lifted his nose, trying to catch sight or smell of the pies. Perhaps then he could get off this stage…

"Ach, weel done!"
Harabec roared out, clapping his furry hands together. "Let's 'ear a braw ditty outta ye, noo fears laddie, give us all ye got!"

“Uh, what?” He managed, looking confused. People were starting to talk now, prodding neighbors with elbows, whispering behind hands. The line was muttering angrily, but all Ben saw was the big juna who’d called out to him. Rough and tough looking, he was obviously a warrior. A warrior like he wanted to be, but Ben had no clue whatsoever as to what he’d shouted.

“Psst!” He looked over to see the raihu who’d boosted him up. “Sing something, or get off the stage!” Ben’s eyes rounded, and he took a step back. Sing? He couldn’t sing. Like most raihu, he could make make noises with his nasal chambers, but that’s all they were. Noises. His singing was almost as bad as his sense of direction, and that was worse than a mute and blind bat’s. And he knew it.

“Uh.” He made a break for the stage edge. “Off.” He wasn’t stage-frightened, he just… didn’t want to sing. He made for the edge of the crowd, somehow ended in the middle and ramming into a large, furry body. Ben looked up from his spot on the ground, grinning slightly idiotically at the juna who’d shouted something to him before.

"Easy there laddie, keep barrelin' aroond like that an' ye likely t'run off a cliff!" Harabec steadied the youngster with a broad hand. Winking, he greeted him in Raihu custom, right hand held out at chest level, palm facing out.

"Tauron's blessin', youngster. Not many Raihu at th' fair this year, but good t'have yer company! Ah'm Harabec, an' you are?" A large furry hand was extended as his shaggy tail swished around his footpaws. The evening chill did little to penetrate his thick brindled fur, but he couldn't help but wonder if the saurian was affected by the cooling autumn air.

Glancing over his shoulder at the stage, he wondered if Mirai was all right. He'd give her a little longer, then check to see if she was indeed okay. She was beginning to feel like his younger sister, though his only sibling was an older brother still living in Ardor.

"Easy there laddie, keep barrelin' aroond like that an' ye likely t'run off a cliff!"

“Well, there was this one time… ” Ben admitted sheepishly as he greeted the big juna in the way of his people, delighted to discover at least one furry fox creature knew the proper way to greet one another. (Unlike that grumpy mage-fighter he’d met in the forest. She’d scorched his tail with a spot of lightning.)

“Nice to meet you, sir.” He said politely as his mother had taught him. “Tauron’s blessing.” He added, his mind beginning to wander as a gust brought both chill and the brief scent of pie his way again. His skin rippled, and he rubbed his arms. Maybe he should take the sparkly and find someplace that sold warmer clothing, it was plain that summer clothes wouldn’t do for much longer here, out of the Waste.

"Tauron's blessin', youngster. Not many Raihu at th' fair this year, but good t'have yer company! Ah'm Harabec, an' you are?"
“Benjahmin, but most call me Ben. I’m glad to be here, means I’m outta the forest!” He said the last with a sort of disgust for his navigating abilities. “I’ve never seen so many trees, for so long, in my life!” He continued. “Is it always so cold? Why is everything so green? —well I know you must get a lot of water here, I did learn something in school— but why so much? Why not in the Waste? And—“ another gust of tempting smells “—where’s the pies? I keep getting lost.” Finally the young raihu stopped for breath, grinning cheerily up at the giant he’d addressed.

[[It doesn’t have to be the best singer, does it? Cause if we’re voting favorites I vote Harabec! How can you not love the great fuzzy and his… enthusiastic singing?]]

Slowly, very slowly, Wing's sobs ceased. She could feel Mirai's heart beating: fear, horror, disgust, but... in spite of all that, she was still stroking her hair, kissing her forehead, comforting her, not the other way around. The Ivory Girl pulled away gently, using her sleeve to wipe the last tears from Mirai's cheeks. To her surprise, she found that she was smiling, the same warm smile she had always worn whenever she had comforted one of her companions back in Vestra. If she let her mind drift, she could almost hear the river flowing, and suddenly she knew that she could speak without fear. In some strange way, this sad woman had taken her home.
"No, you're not fine. If you were fine, you wouldn't be crying. On the inside, I mean." Wing's voice was gentle, her wonderful eyes still glittering with unshed tears. "And don't be sorry. I'm sorry, for making you worry about me." She drew back a little, carefully, just far enough so that her aura was forced to release its icy grip on Mirai's magic, snarling angrily. There. Now the other girl should start feeling a little better.
But something still didn't feel right.
It was the way Mirai was staring at her: a mixture of awe and fear that had nothing to do with the usual revulsion that reared its ugly head whenever she walked into a room. The healer had called her milady, as if she was some sort of goddess...
Wing blanched from snow to ice. Somehow, that look was scarier then even the most murderous puddle-monster. It reached over and crushed her flowering confidence mercilessly, reducing her to an awkward fit of stammering. Blush after blush cascaded across her cheeks, sending her fingers fumbling for her face-wrap... but it wouldn't do up. Her shaking fingers refused to tie the knots, stammering out their own litanies of confusion.
"I... um... I... should... I should go... I'm sorry... I... I'm..."
...Wing.
"...Rachael."
What? N-no! I'm Wing! That's not... I mean...
The face-wrap slipped from her nerveless fingers. Feeling suddenly and completely naked, The Ivory Girl stood fixed to the spot. Her real name. She never used her real name. So why now?

((Wing would never vote for herself, and I just love Harabec's enthusiasm! Another one for the furry! *hugglesqueeze*))

"...Rachael." Mirai recognized the frightened look in the other girl's eyes; she knew the emotions behind it far too well. Uncertainty, confusion, sorrow; all mingled together in one person far too small to hold them all. The healer studied this new young woman for a moment, noting the return of her soul when Rachael stepped back...and then bent down, plucking the face wrap out of the mud and wrapping it carefully around Rachael's head. The wrap was fastened with careful and deft fingers, then Mirai smiled at the nervous little creature and twined their hands together.

Her magic blinked out once more, but never in her life had Mirai encountered someone afraid of her, and Rachael's fear spoke volumes to any healer with even a pinch of sense. This strange girl, or goddess, or whatever she was, needed a friend and badly. "You're right, I'm not fine. But that's none of your fault, so don't fret. Come, you sang so beautifully--I'm sure you're about to win a prize. And we wouldn't want to miss that, now would we?"

Mirai tugged Wing gently forward, hopping off her barrel to guide the other girl back to the stage. "I've heard that the food they serve here is the best in the entire Fair. And look." She plucked at the ocarina hanging around her neck, lifting it up for Wing to see. "We could make some lovely music together. Maybe you can teach me how to sing a little better; my voice is weak. I don't like it much."

((I vote for Wing to get the food, and Harabec to get the funny hat. XDD ))

[[ Aww you guys are too nice to Harabec ^^ ]]

“I’ve never seen so many trees, for so long, in my life!” He continued. “Is it always so cold? Why is everything so green? —well I know you must get a lot of water here, I did learn something in school— but why so much? Why not in the Waste? And—“ another gust of tempting smells “—where’s the pies? I keep getting lost.”

Harabec laughed merrily, holding up one hand as if to stop the flow of words spouting from the young Raihu's mouth. He was practically whistling through his horns in excitement and curiosity.

"Hold on there laddie, ye'll burst from wantin' to know so much!" But thebig shaggy Kahl winked his twinkling eyes and leaned down (not too far though, even a young Raihu was tall by human standards). "Y'know th' best way to learn aboot th' kingdoms is to explore them! Experience everythin', climb th' mountains, wander th' forests, and talk to people. Ye've already gotten that far, m'bucko. Tis colder here than summer, but it's gonna get colder come winter, ye ken. As for th' pies, ho ho," Harabec chuckled and patted him on the back. "We're aboot t' get some, once th' winner is announced, then tis on to th' pie and food, even if we don't win anythin'!"

He tapped a thick claw against his right horn. "Ah wonder where that lass 'as gone," he rumbled to himself, speaking of Mirai. Oh, there she was, just coming around the stage with the other girl in tow. They were both red-eyed, and Harabec's heart went out to the dear lasses. Something about the pale girl's song had touched everyone's hearts, and Mirai most of all, it seemed.

"Weel noo, Mirai lass, there ye are!" Harabec said kindly as he threaded (well, perhaps that's too kind a word, as several disgruntled passersby would think) his way through the crowd. "Are ye well lassies?" This time his query went to both of them as he gave Wing an encouraging smile.

[[ I vote for Wing, her song was beautiful! We'll wait for anyone else to vote, and then announce the winners 8) ]]

"Beccy!" Black and blinding yellow streaked past the crowd and tackled the giant juna around the waist. "Hi!" The juna straightened up with a grin for the taller Harabec. She was dark-furred, brindled black on grey, and could have been a kahl herself, except she possessed three tails and no horns. "How have you been?" The hyperactive guard bounced up and down on her paws, a wide grin splitting her face. She looked around Harabec and smiled and waved at the two women he was speaking to. "Hi! I'm Nuri!"

Harabec's laughter boomed out across the crowd as he was accosted by a furry streak. "Weel, if et isn't mah frien' th' mighty Nuriko! Grand t'see ye here lassie! Weelcome to th' Autumn Fair! Ye missed th' singin' contest, twas a braw thing, Ah even sang meself!"

He ruffled her ears with a massive hand and chuckled again. "This is mah friend Nuriko Elswyth, Ah don't know if ye've met before," he said by way of introduction to the others around him. Wing and Mirai were still silent, and he wondered if something had happened between them.

((Sorry about the quality: I'm still jetlagged. ><))

Speechless. Wing was speechless. The other girl, Mirai... she didn't seem afraid of her anymore. She was touching her, talking to her! An electric need to answer flooded Wing from top to toe.
Of course I can teach you! Singing isn't that hard, you just need to trust your own voice. I'm not that good myself, really, I just do whatever feels right and... oh...
Wing's lips faltered, confused.
Half-panicking, Wing struggled to find her voice, but it seemed to have left the fair without her.
Knowing it, it was probably somewhere around Talor by now. She thought glumly.
And then she saw Harabec's beaming smile, and everything changed. Looking back, Wing decided that his fur had to have some sort of magical power that her aura couldn't stifle: a fluffy aura that warmed her from the inside out, reassuring her that everything was alright, that she could speak without any worries.
And with Mirai at her side?
Somehow, the three Juna (one gigantic, one grinning, one taciturn,) and the bumbling Raihu didn't seem quite so scary.
"I'm Wing." She blurted, almost cutting Harabec's introduction in two by accident. "It's a pleasure to meet you!" Both girl and her somewhat surprised aura dipped a curtsey, and Wing was forced to anchor herself to Mirai's arm: the giddy sense of happiness pounding in her temples was making her dizzy. And her voice wouldn't stop babbling!
"And this is Mirai. We're going to play music together, at least, as soon as we practice and everything: she says she's not a very good singer, but I don't believe her, I think she's going to be a fantastic singer, and she's not scared of me but that's kinda scary in itself because normally bright people are really scared of me but she wasn't, so... I don't know if that's scary or not... um... sorry..." Her head dipped automatically, hair swinging down into its usual position to hide her raging blush. "It's... it's lovely to meet you all. Really."
